In his controversial book, Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom & Success, famed author Napoleon Hill defined the term “drifting”:
“I can best define the word ‘drift’ by saying that people who think for themselves never drift, while those who do little or no thinking for themselves are drifters. A drifter is one who permits himself to be influenced and controlled by circumstances outside of his own mind.
A drifter is one who accepts whatever life throws in his way without making a protest or putting up a fight. He doesn’t know what he wants from life and spends all of his time getting just that.”
To me, drifting through life — especially fatherhood — would be the greatest of hells. It’s so easy to drift through the manaughtny of waking up, getting your kids ready for the day, work, after work and school activities, etc., etc., etc.
I challenge you to think: “Am I drifting?”
If so, put an end to it. Have purpose. Have direction. Don’t stare back at this time in your life and not know what actually happened and how you grew.
